I dont see what the hype is. Okay. They do create some good music. SO? Why are they so much more legendary than every other big group out there?
And 2NE1? I dont see how they are so ‘unique’. Just because they wear weird ass clothes and sing in auto tune doesnt mean that other groups can’t. There are heaps of groups out there that can properly sing without auto.
YG aint that great. It’s just the same as every other group + being over rated.
“just because they wear weird ass clothes”

Okay, here’s how I see it.
BigBang is legendary to me because they produce great music. Yes. Produce. BigBang is full of skill whether it’s songwriting to dancing to singing to rapping to composing songs. They also don’t follow the cookie-cutter mold that most other boy groups in kpop do. While it works for those other groups, BigBang breaks out of that by having various musical styles, ranging from classic tracks like “Haru Haru” and “Lies” to Taeyang’s soft-styled “I Need A Girl” song to party-style/hiphop pieces like what GD and TOP did on their duo album.
2NE1 is legendary to me because they aren’t considered beautiful by the high-set standards in kpop. Well, with the exception of Dara, of course. But people tend to call them out on not even being as hot as other girl groups. See, that’s what hits home for me, personally. They may not look amazing by your standards, but they certainly deliver in every other area from fashion to personality to musical abilities. Each of the girls brings something interesting to the table. Bommie has astounding vocals [without autotune], Dara has an unbelievably cute/weird personality that I couldn’t help but love, Minji has some of the craziest dance skills I’ve seen out of any kpop girl group, and Chaerin is dripping in swag whether she’s rapping or walking down a red carpet. These girls aren’t your typical cutesy kpop girl group. They aren’t parading themselves around in what other girls commonly wear on stage. Instead, they’re in those same clothes you find weird and make them look amazing. They don’t take the stage with excessive amounts of cuteness and high-pitched voices, they own their stage with songs of strength, courage, confidence, and independence. And about the autotune, I hope you saw their live performances and YG On Air sessions before you posted this, cuz if you didn’t, you have no idea what you’re on about.
And you said YG ain’t that great? These are just two of their groups. I didn’t even count Se7en or Gummy or 1TYM, etc. YG deserves the attention they’re getting, they’ve earned it.
I told this story to whatadani the other week but yeah… here is a watered down version of the whole thing.

Anon1: too bad general public both love them and their music.
Anon2: link?
breathelovelove: Well, it ain’t hard to know this.
I have been interacting with Koreans since 2006, as friends and colleagues. Idol groups are not really well respected in Korea. International fandoms make them seem like a big deal but they really aren’t in Korea. However, with the case of Big Bang, people generally like them. They are well respected because they make their own music.
As a 34 year old Korean friend of mine said, “Big Bang is popular because of the quality of their music.”
Maybe it isn’t to you, but to the Koreans, it is.
EDIT: I do not know the situation for 2NE1 but for YG Family in general, the opinion is the same.
I actually remember a funny incident a while back, when one of my Korean friends approached me to ask about a common friend named X (he is a fan of another boygroup in Korea). She was nervous and asked me, “Don’t be upset but is X gay?” and I said, “No. Why?” She laughed awkwardly and said, “Because he likes ___.” So I answered for my friend, “Ah, he isn’t gay. He just likes ____.” “But this group is only liked because of their face. Only middle school girls like groups like this.” So I had to step in, “But Big Bang also has a lot of guy fans.” And what she said made me smile, “But Big Bang is different. People like Big Bang because of their music and their fashion. Not because of their face.”
